Posted By: Dattatreya Mandal November 26, The so-named Suburban Baths of Pompeii were probably constructed some time around the end of the 1st century BC, with their location against the city walls north of the Porta Marina. And as the name suggests, they served as a public thermal complex corresponding to the Julio-Claudian age. To that end, Professor Massimo Osanna, Superintendent of the Archaeological Site of Pompeii, has recently agreed to give public access to some of the recently restored Suburban Baths — known for their erotic frescoes. Now beyond sensationalism, the artworks when viewed objectively, do reflect a slice of sexual history shared by the Romans, at a time when they were arguably at their apex in terms of political power and influence.

The Suburban Baths are located in Pompeii , Italy. Pompeii located in the Italian region of Campania was destroyed on August 24, 79 AD when Mount Vesuvius erupted, burying the entire city along with Herculaneum and consequently preserving them. They served as a public bath house to the residents of Pompeii They were originally discovered in and have since been excavated and restored. Excavation of the Suburban Baths have given historians a glimpse into an aspect of the social and cultural workings of Roman life in Pompeii. The entrance to the Baths is through a long corridor that leads into the dressing room. Excavation of the Baths revealed only one set of dressing rooms and has led to speculation by archaeologists that both men and women shared this facility.

Suburban Baths. The Romans were not afraid of invading enemies and therefore preferred to build their baths on an artificial terrace outside the city wall. The reasons for choosing this place were more aesthetic rather than practical reasons. In ancient times, the sea was much closer and visitors could marvel at a beautiful view of the Mediterranean Sea.
Sex as an appealing advertising element is used in an original manner in the Suburban Baths , the building brought back to light outside of Porta Marina. The monument is divided into two floors. On the lower are the thermal rooms while on the upper floor are three apartments that were for lease and enjoyed a splendid view of the coastline.
